JAMAICA INDEPENDENCE DAY

5 ago 2011

Jamaica is a Caribbean island and was discovered by Cristopher Colombus in his 2nd voyage around America. The first settlers were Spanish and they occupied Jamaica in 1504. However, the British established their control over the island in the 17th century and in 1834 Jamaica was made a Crown Colony.
After years of colonization, Jamaica acquired its independence from the British in 1962 and its own Constitution was created.

The official language of Jamaica is English, but they speak an English-African Creole language called Jamaican Patois (English+ African languages + Native American words)  due to its cultural diversity.

Jamaica is world wide known for its athletics figures such as  Kerron Stewart, Aleen Bailey, Juliet Cuthbert...or its musical genres: reggae, ska, mento, rocksteady, dub, and, more recently, dancehall and ragga. The fact is that we do not know too much about this country and because of that, it deserves a site on our blog to commerate Jamaican Independence Day, August 6th.

This country is part of the Commonwealth ( association of 54 countries which shared a past with Britain), you can find more information about it on
                                              http://www.thecommonwealth.org/
